Web Citation Resources

February 5th, 2007

Hi GenYES Teachers,

One very important component to a technology project that students can sometimes overlook is referencing the sources they use in the project. At this point of the school year many students are well into their project and some just starting new ones. Either way this can be a good time to double check to see if students have remembered to give credit where credit is due.

The GenYES Online Toolkit in Unit 4: Online Research has many teacher and student friendly activities to practice and learn the correct ways to cite sources. Info page 4Q is a Web Citation Guide while 4R is the interactive quiz to go along with the citation guide. This is just one example of the resources your students can use to get familiar citing sources and copyright laws.

When you look for music and clip art to use in projects, look for the words, “Royalty Free”. This means that the composer or artist allows use of their work without payment. Some great sites for royalty free music and clip art are:

  • http://freedigitalphotos.net/- Beautiful, real life royalty free stock images. All Images are free but must link back to Freedigitalphotos.net
  • http://www.royaltyfreemusic.com/ – This website offers a diverse set of royalty free music that can be used in educational, student and personal, non-profit projects, free of charge.
  • http://pics4learning.com/ – This website was developed by educators to share photos for school use. You can donate your own photos too.

Help your student give credit where credit is due. Develop the skills that will stay with them through their educational and professional careers. Keep up the great work!

Megan
