I've been trying to figure out what goes so horribly wrong when kids enter -and fail to thrive in- algebra 1. Kamii lays out methods that strengthen -rather than interfere with- kids native abilities. In a similar vein, I recommend folks consider Tom Carpenter's Cognitively Guided Instruction methods, lots of parallels here. I can't wait to read more from Kamii. I put Young Children Reinvent Arithmetic: Book 1 on order w/ Amazon today. Thanks!
